Public Talk "Sketches of Local History: Episodes from Looking at the Land"

Thursday, March 12, 2015 - 10:30 to 12:00

This will be a lively, entertaining, and well-illustrated presentation by Conrad and Claudia Vispo for the Adult Learning Institute at Columbia Greene Community College. The audience will “meet” some of the historical figures who have lived in Columbia County and have either contributed to shaping the land or significantly expanded our knowledge about it. The “guests” will include a lord of the manor who initiated a sheep boom in the early 1800s with all its repercussions for land and industry, many of which are still visible today; a number of eminent scientists who contributed much early knowledge about geology, flora and fauna, and provided a baseline for understanding our ongoing dynamic interactions with nature; a poet, whose land, for whatever reason, remains a hotbed for native biodiversity; and a mystery guests who left a huge mark on the land which determined the flow of traffic and patterns of development since the 1950s.

The program will be held in the Faculty/Staff Lounge of Columbia Greene Community College. It is free, but if you are planning to attend, please contact Margaret at the Adult Learning Institute (518.828.4181 Ext. 3431) or ali@sunycgcc.edu to register.
