SUMMARY:Historical Weather Day at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:Join the Farmscape Ecology Program as they set up their historical weather station display for an “historical weather day” at the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. The weather station display will feature antique and replica weather instruments\, predominantly from the 19th century. The event will be an opportunity to learn about and interact with these early weather instruments\, many of which were manufactured and/or used locally. Some such tools were part of a 19th century meteorological network throughout New York State that included sites in Kinderhook\, Hudson\, New Lebanon\, Chatham\, and Spencertown. Slightly later instrumentation was used by the US Weather Bureau\, the precursor of our current Weather Service. \nVisitors will be invited to try their hand at reading the weather conditions on some of the still-functional instruments\, and learn more about their history and use. A daily almanac derived from meteorological and seasonal observations made by 19th century observers in Kinderhook and nearby towns will be available for perusing\, as well as historical weather maps. These historical weather observations provide a window into how weather and climate has changed since Martin Van Buren’s time\, and some of the local effects of those changes.

SUMMARY:What Makes Old-growth Forests Special and How to Save Them
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a talk by Joan Maloof for a visual exploration of old growth forests and a call for their conservation on Monday\, Aug. 31st\, 6:30pm in the Learning Center Hawthorne Valley Farm (327 Rte 21C\, Ghent\, NY 12075). \nWhat is an old growth forest\, how might you recognize it\, what does it feel like to walk through one\, and why is old growth forest conservation ecologically important? \nJoan Maloof is Professor emeritus at Salisbury College and founder and former Executive Director of the Old Growth Forest Network. She continues her work to promote old-growth conservation and has written several books about forests including Forty Ways to Know a Tree\, The Living Forest: A Visual Journey into the Heart of the Woods\, Nature’s Temples: The Complex World of Old-Growth Forests\, Among the Ancients: Adventures in the Eastern Old-Growth Forests\, and Teaching the Trees: Lessons from the Forest. She will share her experiences amongst the trees and amongst people interested in saving those trees. \nTalk location: The Learning Center @ 327 Rte 21C\, Ghent\, NY 12075 on the Farm Store side of the road (between Main House and the barn/CSA pick-up; we’ll put up signage).\nParking: Waldorf school parking lot across from the Farm Store. \nThe talk is free. No registration needed!

SUMMARY:Insects in the Orchard at Lindenwald
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of insect life in the Martin Van Buren orchard with entomologists from the Farmscape Ecology Program’s Insect Conservation Center. During this event\, participants will learn to use the citizen science platform iNaturalist to contribute to an orchard “bioblitz” and discover the important roles that insects such as ants\, bees\, butterflies\, and wasps play in agriculture. Participants should bring their mobile devices\, cameras\, and questions about insects and how to identify them. Please email kbradford@hawthornevalley.org with any questions. \nWorkshops start at 10 am and 1 pm\, come to one or both!

SUMMARY:New Date: Fall Meadow Work Day at Forge Project
DESCRIPTION:Due to the unfavorable forecast for Thursday\, this event has been rescheduled. It now will take place on Friday\, Sept. 18. \nThe Farmscape Ecology Program has been involved in the transitioning of the former agricultural fields and traditionally landscaped areas into native meadows and shrublands that will feature native and culturally significant species. Guests can expect to learn some of the native plants we try to support and help remove invasives. This is a seasonal opportunity to participate hands-on in some of the remediation work happening onsite and learn how you can fold simple restoration practices into your own home spaces and gardens. \nBasic plant identification will be led by the Farmscape Ecology Program team\, and Paloma Wake\, Forge Project Operations Director\, will share about some of the shifts happening throughout the land at Forge Project and the organization’s ongoing relations with the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohicans\, the homeland people who this land belongs to and who belong to this land. \nGuests are asked to bring their own gardening gloves and hand tools if possible (for example a digging fork\, dandelion digger\, hand clippers\, and weed wrench); a water bottle; and a willingness to work together. Snacks and beverages will be provided by Forge Project. Introductions will be led at 4:15pm and 5:45pm\, and while participants are required to sign up for one session\, they are welcome to stay for both. Interested participants should register with the Forge Project via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fall-meadow-work-day-tickets-1986821212731.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk on the Biodiversity Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join Laura and Hawthorne Valley’s Spencer Crawford for a morning bird walk along the Biodiversity Trail. The trail is approximately one mile with some uneven terrain. Fall migration is well underway\, and we hope to see many exciting species passing through. Please email lstark@hawthornevalley.org to register; space is limited.

SUMMARY:Kinderhook Pine Barrens at Lindenwald (Tours)
DESCRIPTION:Tours of an experimental\, sandy “Kinderhook Pine Barrens” plot that was installed last year within the orchard and features the types of sand-frequenting plant species that may have historically populated Kinderhook when the area had pine barrens\, including when Martin Van Buren was growing up there. The Farmscape Ecology Program has identified the Kinderhook Pine Barrens as a “ghost” habitat now missing from our landscape\, and participants will not only visit the restoration and nearby wild-growing trees that may serve as pine barren remnants but also learn about this fascinating lost habitat. \nTours will be offered at 10:15\, 11:15\, 1:15\, and 2:15.
